prof Jaime Da Cunha Branco Has a Degree in Medicine from the Medical School of the Universidade Clássica de Lisboa, since 1978. Jaime Da Cunha Branco is a Specialist in Rheumatology, since 1988 and is the Head of the Rheumatology Department of the Hospital Egas Moniz (HEM), Lisbon, since 1992. Jaime Da Cunha Branco has a Doctorate (PhD) in Medicine/Rheumatology, in the Medical Sciences School (MCS) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL), since 1997 and is the Chief of Rheumatology Service by the Carreira Médica Hospitalar – HEM, since 1998. Jaime Da Cunha Branco is Assistant Professor of Medical Pathology/Rheumatology of the School of UNL, since 1999 and a Principal Investigator at CEDOC – Centro de Estudo das Doenças Reumáticas, FCM, UNL, since 2008.
Jaime Da Cunha Branco is the Author or co-author of about 500 scientific presentations and is the Author or co-author of about 300 scientific publications as well as the Editor of several books and was Granted 25 scientific awards (including Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica, 2008).
Jaime Da Cunha Branco is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and was a Member of the Scientific Committee of EULAR 2001-2004.
He was also the Former President of SPODOM – Sociedade Portuguesa das Doenças Ósseas Metabólicas (2000-2002), as well as the Local President of the World Congress of Osteoporosis (Lisbon, 10-14/5/2002) and the President of the European Congress of Rheumatology (Lisbon, 18-21/6/2003).
Jaime Da Cunha Branco is a Member of OARSI, a Former President of SPR – Sociedade Portuguesa de Reumatologia (2002-2004), President of CIAR – Colégio Ibero-Americano de Reumatologia (2007-2010) and a Former President of LPCDR – Liga Portuguesa contra as Doenças Reumáticas (2005-2008).
Jaime Da Cunha Branco was a Member of the Committee that prepared PNCDR – Programa Nacional contra as Doenças Reumáticas (2002-2004) and a Member of the PNCDR Committee (2004-2006) and its actual Coordinator (2006-2008/2008-2010).
 
Beverly Collett is a Consultant in Pain Medicine at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
She is a Council member and Examiner for the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. She is immediate Past-Treasurer and Council member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), and was the facilitator for IASP’s Global Year against Pain for 2007/8 ‘Pain in Women’. She was Chair of the IASP SIG ‘Pain of Urogenital Origin’ (PUGO) 2008-2010.
She is a Past-President of the British Pain Society and of the International Pelvic Pain Society and previously Honorary Secretary of the European Federation of IASP Chapters. She is Chair of the Chronic Pain Policy Coalition (CPPC) – a group facilitating patients, parliamentarians and health care professionals to improve pain management in the UK.

Troels S. Jensen, MD, DMSc, is a consultant in neurology and Professor of Experimental and Clinical Pain Research, leading the Danish Pain Research Center at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Dr. Jensen obtained his doctor of medical sciences degree from the University of Aarhus for work in part carried out at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He completed his postgraduate clinical fellowship at the Hôpital de la Salpetriere in Paris, France, and his residency in neurology, neurosurgery, and neurophysiology at university hospitals in Aarhus and Copenhagen. Dr. Jensen has held research fellowships and guest professorships in other countries, including the US and Germany.

Dr. Jensen has authored more than 300 scientific papers on various neurological and neurobiological topics, and has received awards for his pain research. He was section editor for the journal Pain. He serves on the editorial boards of other journals, and is a reviewer for a number of pain and neurology journals and grant committees.  Dr. Jensen has been member of several committees particularly within International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) where he most recently served as president from 2005-08. He was Knighted by Her Royal Highness the Queen of Denmark in 2006.

Martin E Johnson qualified from Leeds University in 1981, moving into General Practice in Barnsley in 1985.
Martin E Johnson went part time in 1997 so that he could devote some time to Primary Care Research.  One aspect of research that particularly interested him was the management of Chronic Pain.
The interest continued to develop. Subsequently Martin E Johnson has written several articles regarding pain relief, particularly focusing on neuropathic pain & also the use of opioids.

Martin E Johnson chair the Pain Committee of the Royal College of General Practitioners and is the Vice Chair of the Primary & Community Pain Management Special Interest Group of the British Pain Society.

Also Martin E Johnson is the GP member of the Chronic Pain Policy Coalition helping to drive national issues surrounding pain management. Martin E Johnson is involved in the development of a National Agenda in the UK for improving the management of pain, especially within Primary Care.

Martin E Johnson is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University in Community Pain.

His particular interests in pain management are the effective management of pain within Primary Care and having adequate systems in place to deliver this service, neuropathic pain & the early intervention of pain.

Martin E Johnson is also a Trustee on Action on Pain & The Patient’s Association.

Eija Kalso, M.D., D.Med. Sci is the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Professor of Pain Medicine and Vice Dean at the faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki. She is currently president of IASP.

Dr. Kalso has been the field editor for clinical science in Pain and she serves on several editorial boards.

Dr. Kalso graduated from the Medical School of the University of Helsinki in 1980, defended her thesis on “Nerve Blocking Properties and Toxicity of Bupivacaine in Spinal and Intravenous Regional Anaesthesia” in 1983 and became specialist in  anaesthesiology in 1986. She was appointed as associate professor in
anaesthesiology in 1992, University of Helsinki. She received special competence in pain management in 1999. She has worked as a post doc at the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, University of Oxford, with Sir Keith Sykes and Professor Henry McQuay, and at the University College London, with Professor Anthony Dickenson. She has also worked as a clinical teacher in anaesthesiology at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Kalso’s main interests in research include opioid pharmacology, spinal mechanisms of nociception, cancer pain, clinical trial design and EBM, persistent postsurgery pain and genetics of pain.

 

bruce-kidd2 Bruce Kidd is professor of clinical rheumatology at Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, London, and consultant rheumatologist at the Royal London Hospital. He serves as co-director of the Academic Pain Group and as well as being program director for undergraduate medical education. His basic science research has focused on mechanisms underlying pain in osteoarthritis, as well as exploring neuroimmune interactions in chronic arthritis. At the same time, he has been involved in translational studies exploring the use of quantitative sensory testing methods to predict symptomatic and functional outcomes in musculoskeletal diseases
 
sebastiano Sebastiano Mercadante received his Doctor's degree in Medicine & Surgery in 1979 from the University of Palermo.  In 1983 he completed his Specialization in Anesthesiology from University of Palermo and in 1987 his Specialization in Science of Nutrition.  He is currently the Director of Anesthesia & Intensive Care Unit, Pain Relief & Palliative Care Unit, La Maddalena Clinic for Cancer in Palermo, Italy, and Professor of Palliative Medicine at University of Palermo.  He has given over 300 lectures at national and international congresses and was a member of the Editorial Board and/or referee of more than 30 international peer-reviewed journals in the field of pain and symptom management, and anaesthesiology.  He is an Expert Consultant for grants for Cancer Research UK, Swiss Palliative Care Research Group, Spanish Telecom Award and has had  more than 300 papers published in peer-reviewed international journals. He is the Author of more than 40 chapters and books and was the chairman of the Scientific Committee of the XI congress of ESRA, Italian Chapter, Palermo, 2004.Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the 7th congress of the European Association for Palliative Care, Palermo, April 1-5th, 2001, and Chairman of the Scientific Congress of 22° congress of MAASC, Rome, 2009. He was a member of dozens of scientific committees of international congresses and was the winner of Premio Umberto Veronesi 2003 and of award of excellence in scientific research, American Academy of Hospice and palliative medicine, Boston 2010.
 
romao2 José Romão has a degree in Medicine from the Medical School of the University of Porto since 1984. He’s a Consultant in Anesthesiology and Coordinator of the Chronic Pain Unit at Centro Hospitalar do Porto – Hospital de Santo António in Porto. He has the Competence in Pain Medicine granted by the Portuguese Medical Board.
He is an Invited Associate Professor at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (Porto-Portugal) since 2005.
He is the immediate past President of the portuguese pain association (APED) and presently he’s the Coordinator of the National Committee for the Management of Pain
 
jean Jean Schoenen has gained his medical degree in 1972 from Liège University. He was for 2 years an International Fogarty Fellow in the departments of Neurology and Neuropathology of the Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Medical School where he obtained certificates in Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuropathology. He is board-certified neurologist since 1979 and holds doctoral and post-doctoral degrees from Liège University. He was Research Director of the National Fund for Scientific Research-Belgium and Clinical Professor in Neurology before taking over Full Professorship at Liège University in 2003. His Research has focused on headache and spinal cord anatomy and pathology. He is leading the Headache & Neuronal Regeneration Research Unit and Headache Clinic at Liège University. He has 852 publications among which 375 peer-reviewed articles (H index: 47) and 86 book chapters. He is Associate Editor of Cephalalgia and Editor-in-chief of Acta Neurologica Belgica. He is a former President of the International Headache Society and of the Belgian Neurological Society. He is founder and present chairman of the Belgian Brain Council.
 
chris Chris Wells is a Specialist in Pain Relief in Liverpool, UK.  He was Director of the Walton Centre for Pain Relief from 1983 to 1995.  During that time, he introduced Pain Management Programmes to the UK (1983) and pioneered drug delivery systems in the UK. He now works in private practice in the North West of England. He is particularly interested in back and neuropathic pain.

He is an active member of IASP (the International Association of the Study of Pain) and the British Pain Society (BPS). He was Secretary of the World Society of Pain Clinicians from 1995-1998, the BPS from 2000 to 2002, and of the European Federation of IASP Chapters from 2002 to 2005.  He was a Board Member of the World Institute of Pain (WIP) from 1998 to 2003, and a Grandfather Examiner for the FIPP, their interventional Fellowship. He is an Honorary Member of the British Pain Society.

He is a Founder Member of NeuPSIG (the IASP special interest group on neuropathic pain).  He was the Treasurer from 1999 to 2008. He was co-Chair of their successful international meetings in Madrid in 2004 and Berlin in 2007.  He Chaired the successful 3rd International NeuPSIG Congress in Athens, from May 26th to 30th, 2010.   He has been made one of only 4 Honorary Members of the neuropathic pain SIG.

He is Treasurer of the World Society of Pain Clinicians and is organising the 14th International Congress on Pain Medicine in Granada, from 27th to 30th June 2012. 

Dr Wells lectures extensively all over the world.  He gave the British Pain Society lecture at the Annual General Meeting in 2008.   He gave the EFIC David Niv Memorial Lecture in 2009, at their biennial meeting in Lisbon.  He has been on the Editorial Board of Palliative Medicine and Pain Practice, and is a regular reviewer of articles for Pain, the European Journal of Pain, the BMJ and the Lancet.  He has written 4 books on pain and over 60 articles in journals.
